Lamana Ali

Lamana Ali is a Muslim author, science fiction and fantasy writer, and publishing entrepreneur whose work brings the intellectual, cultural, and spiritual heritage of the Islamic world into speculative fiction. Born in Chad and raised in Queens, New York, after immigrating to the United States as a child, Ali has developed a distinctive literary vision shaped by his experiences across cultures, his lifelong love of books, and his conviction that the history of Muslim civilization offers extraordinary possibilities for imaginative storytelling.

After spending approximately three decades working in sales, business development, and nonprofit fundraising, Ali turned a lifelong ambition into a literary career. His debut novel, The Celestial Ashes, transforms the historical tragedy of the fall of the last Moorish kingdom in Granada into an epic science fantasy about political betrayal, forbidden love, inherited conflict, and the consequences of pride. First published independently, the novel attracted early reader interest and subsequently secured an exclusive worldwide publishing agreement with SLKY World in August 2026, with a revised edition scheduled for early 2027.

Ali is also the founder of Lamana Publishing, an independent publishing imprint established to champion Islamic science fiction and fantasy. Through this initiative, he seeks to create space for stories rooted in Muslim history, theology, scientific achievement, and cultural traditions, while expanding the possibilities of speculative fiction for readers around the world.

Now writing full-time from Ghana, Ali is developing a growing body of work that combines the scale and imaginative freedom of epic fantasy with the historical depth and philosophical questions of Islamic civilization. His ambition extends beyond publishing individual novels: he hopes to help establish a literary tradition in which Muslim writers can create expansive fictional universes grounded in their own histories, cultures, and intellectual heritage.

The Celestial Ashes: Reimagining a Lost Civilization

At the heart of Lamana Ali's literary journey is The Celestial Ashes, an epic science fantasy inspired by the fall of the last Moorish kingdom in Granada, Spain, in 1492. The novel takes one of the most consequential episodes in the history of Muslim civilization and reimagines its central tensions within a distant future, creating a world of floating cities, ancient knowledge, forbidden weapons, rival empires, and dynastic conflict.

The idea for the novel first took root when Ali was about fourteen or fifteen. As a teenager, he encountered the story of the final Moorish kingdom in Granada and was struck by the tragedy of a sophisticated civilization whose decline was shaped not simply by external enemies, but also by internal divisions, political rivalries, family conflict, and the misuse of power.

The historical events stayed with him for years. He became fascinated by the possibility of taking that story beyond its original setting and asking a different question: what might have happened if the civilization had survived, continued to develop, and carried its intellectual traditions into an entirely different future?

That question eventually became the foundation of The Celestial Ashes. Although the novel is set in an imagined world, its emotional and political foundations draw on historical events and the experiences of Al-Andalus. The fall of Granada becomes a point of departure for examining the choices that can determine whether a civilization flourishes or destroys itself.

The result is a story that combines the imaginative possibilities of science fantasy with the consequences of recognizable human weaknesses. Pride, ambition, loyalty, forbidden love, and the struggle between personal desire and collective responsibility become forces capable of changing the fate of entire societies.

For Ali, the historical inspiration is deeply personal. As a Muslim writer, he has been particularly interested in the relative absence of Muslim civilizations and characters from many mainstream science fiction and fantasy narratives. He sees an extraordinary wealth of stories in Islamic history, including the achievements of Muslim astronomers, mathematicians, physicians, engineers, philosophers, and scholars whose work helped shape the development of knowledge across the world.

The Celestial Ashes attempts to bring some of that history into the imaginative space of epic speculative fiction. Rather than simply recreating the past, he uses it as the foundation for a civilization that can develop its own technologies, political systems, conflicts, and mythology.

One of the defining characteristics of The Celestial Ashes is its commitment to building an imagined future from the intellectual and cultural foundations of Islamic civilization.

In much conventional science fiction and fantasy, the technological and cultural systems of fictional worlds draw heavily on familiar European historical models. Ali wanted to explore what a speculative universe might look like if its foundations emerged instead from the scientific, philosophical, artistic, and spiritual traditions of the Muslim world.

This approach influences the novel's worldbuilding. Its technologies are inspired by real scientific achievements associated with Islamic history, while its architecture, political structures, and cultural environment draw on the traditions of Moorish civilization and the wider intellectual heritage of Muslim societies.
